What is the appendix?
Why do we have it?
Even though the appendix isn’t used every day, it might be useful when your body is fighting off a bug or germ. It acts like a backup storage for healthy cells that can help fix your intestine if it gets hurt.
Sometimes, the appendix gets blocked and causes pain, that’s called appendicitis, but most of the time, it just sits there quietly, waiting to be useful someday!
Examples
- A child gets appendicitis and needs surgery, but why did the body even have an appendix in the first place?
- Someone wonders why they still have an appendix after learning about it in school.
- A person reads online that their appendix might not be useless after all.
