Forests make a loud noise when they are cut down because the whole tree vibrates like a giant drum. When you hit a tree with an axe, it starts to fall and shake, this shaking sends waves through the ground and the air, which is what we hear as a big noise. It's kind of like how a bell rings when you strike it, but for a whole forest!
