Why do cats have vertical pupils? - Emma Bryce?

Cats have vertical pupils because it helps them see better at night and catch their prey.

Imagine you're playing hide-and-seek in a dark room. If your eyes were round like a circle, you might not see the person hiding behind the couch as well as if your eyes were shaped like a rectangle, that's kind of what happens with cats!

How it works

When it's dark, cats' pupils get bigger, like opening a window to let in more light. Their vertical shape means they can expand up and down, letting in just the right amount of light so they can see clearly.

When it's bright, their pupils shrink into thin lines, almost like closing a curtain, to protect their eyes from too much light.

It’s like having special glasses that change size depending on how bright or dark it is outside. That way, cats can hunt mice in the middle of the night and still see clearly when they're basking in the sun during the day!

  2. Imagine your eyes changing shape to see clearly in a flashlight beam, that's what cats do!
  3. Cats can spot prey even in dim light because their pupils widen to let more light in.
