Why Do Bicycles Have Spokes?

Bicycles have spokes to help wheels stay strong and move smoothly.

Imagine your wheel is like a big circle made of rims, tires, and spokes, the thin, straight parts that connect the center of the wheel to its edge. Without spokes, the wheel would be just a flat ring. When you ride your bike, the wheel turns, and if there are no spokes, it might bend or break easily.

Think of spokes like the strings on a kite. If you have only one string, the kite might flap around too much. But if you have many strings, the kite stays steady in the air, just like how spokes help keep the wheel steady when you're riding.

Also, spokes spread out the force from your pedals and brakes all over the wheel, so no one part gets too tired or breaks. That’s why bikes can go fast and far without falling apart!
