Why do AI language models sometimes "hallucinate" incorrect information?

AI language models sometimes guess wrong answers, just like when you're trying to finish a puzzle but some pieces don’t quite fit.

Imagine you have a big box of jigsaw pieces, and you’re trying to make the whole picture. The AI is like a kid who’s putting the puzzle together without seeing the full image. It looks at the pieces it has and tries to figure out what comes next. Sometimes, it picks a piece that looks right but doesn’t actually fit, that’s when it guesses wrong, or "hallucinates."

Like a Storyteller Who Gets Confused

Think of an AI as a storyteller who tells you a story based on what it already knows. If the story goes off track, it might say something that sounds true but isn’t, like saying your favorite toy is blue when it's actually red.

Sometimes, the AI gets mixed up because it sees many different stories and tries to mix them together, just like mixing up your toys in a bag and trying to find one without looking. It makes its best guess, but sometimes that guess doesn’t match what’s really there.
