Why Did People Fear Witchcraft? | History in a Nutshell | Animated History?

People used to think some neighbors were witches, and that made them really scared, like when someone you know turns into a monster in your favorite story.

Imagine your friend suddenly starts making everyone cry, breaking things, or even disappearing. That would be scary! People thought witches could do all sorts of weird stuff, like turning people into animals or causing bad weather. They didn’t have a way to explain these strange events, so they blamed the witches.

Why did it feel real?

Sometimes, a person who was just different, maybe they acted strangely or had unusual habits, would be called a witch. It felt like a game of hide and seek: one day you're playing with your neighbor, and the next day, you're running from them because they're a witch!

People even used to burn witches, thinking that would make all the strange things stop. But it was more like a big, wild guess, kind of like blaming your pet dog for eating your homework!
