Sound needs air to travel. On Earth, we hear things because the air carries the sound from one place to another. But in space, there’s no air, it’s empty like a balloon that has all the air let out. So when astronauts talk on the moon or in the spaceship, they can’t hear each other unless they use radios.
Examples
- A balloon filled with air can carry sound; when you pop it in a vacuum, no one hears the pop.
- When astronauts walk on the moon, they can’t hear each other unless they use radios.
