Why Can't You Use Phones On Planes?

You can't use phones on planes because they sometimes talk back to the plane’s radio system.

Imagine you're playing a game of tag in a big park. Everyone is shouting and running, and it's hard for the person who's "it" to hear the others. That's kind of what happens when too many phones are on a plane, they all send out signals like little radios, and the plane’s radio system gets confused.

How Planes Talk

Planes use radio waves to talk to air traffic control, it helps them know where they're going and how close other planes are. When your phone is on airplane mode or using Wi-Fi, it stops sending out these signals, so the plane can hear clearly again.

Why Phones Are Like Noisy Kids

Phones are like noisy kids in a quiet classroom, they make lots of sounds that distract everyone else. If too many phones are on at once, it's like having a whole group of noisy kids all talking at once, and the teacher (the plane) can't hear what's going on.

Sometimes, planes don’t mind a few phones, it’s like letting one kid talk during class. But if every kid is talking, it gets too loud for the teacher to listen!
