Hong Kong was rented to China for 99 years, and when that time ended, it went back to China.
Imagine you borrow your friend’s toy for a little while, maybe just until the weekend. But if you borrow it for almost a century, like 99 years, then when that time is up, you have to give it back. That's what happened with Hong Kong.
Like a Room in a House
Hong Kong was like a big, special room inside a house, the house being China. For many years, Britain had control of this room. It was like having your own space inside someone else’s house. People could live there, work there, and even have their own rules.
But when the 99 years were up, it was time to move out, just like you would leave a friend's toy back in their room after playing with it for a long time.
So China said, "It's our turn now!" And Hong Kong went back to China, just like a room returning to its home.
