Some countries are having extreme heatwaves more often because their weather is getting warmer, like when you leave your ice cream in the sun too long, it melts faster!
Like a Hot Bath Every Day
Imagine your body is like the Earth. When you take a hot bath, you feel warm. But if you stay in that hot bath for longer and longer days, you start to sweat more and feel even hotter. That’s what's happening with some countries, their air is getting warmer, just like a bath that gets hotter every day.
The Earth Wears a Blanket
Think of the Earth wearing a blanket made of gases. This blanket keeps the heat from escaping into space. But when we use lots of cars, factories, and things that burn fuel, we add more gas to this blanket, making it thicker. A thicker blanket means the Earth gets warmer, so heatwaves become stronger and happen more often.
It’s like your blanket is getting bigger every year, and soon you’ll be swimming in hot water instead of just sitting in a warm bath!
Examples
- Australia experiences more heatwaves because it's surrounded by oceans that warm up slowly, trapping the heat.
- Heatwaves can make plants wilt and dry up the land like a desert.
