Why are so few foods blue?

Few foods are blue because most things don’t have that color naturally, it’s like how your favorite toys aren’t usually blue either.

Why It's Rare

Most fruits and veggies get their colors from special helpers inside them called pigments. Think of pigments as the paint that makes a fruit look red, orange, or green. But blue is tricky, there are fewer kinds of blue pigments in nature. That means it’s harder for foods to be blue like how it's easier for things to be red or yellow.

The Exception

There’s one famous blue food, blueberries! They get their color from a pigment called anthocyanin, which is also found in grapes and eggplants. But blueberries are special because they have just the right mix of pigments to look blue when they’re ripe.

So, even though blue is a cool color, it doesn’t show up often in food, like how you don’t see many blue toys in your toy box! Few foods are blue because most things don’t have that color naturally, it’s like how your favorite toys aren’t usually blue either.
