Why are microplastics becoming such a significant environmental problem?

Microplastics are tiny pieces of plastic that are making our environment really busy and not so happy.

Imagine you're playing with a big pile of Legos, they’re fun to build with, but if you drop them all over the floor, it's hard to clean up. Microplastics are like those small Lego bricks, but instead of being on your bedroom floor, they're floating in our oceans and even inside our bodies.

Microplastics come from bigger plastics that break down over time, like when a plastic bottle gets crushed by waves or a plastic bag turns into tiny pieces because it's been sitting out for years. It's like taking a big block of Play-Doh and squishing it until it becomes little crumbs.

How Microplastics Spread

Microplastics can get everywhere because they're so small. They go into the water, where fish and other sea animals eat them, kind of like how you might accidentally swallow a crumb while eating a sandwich. Then, when we eat those fish, the microplastics end up in our bodies too.

That’s why microplastics are becoming such a big problem, they're everywhere, and it's hard to get rid of them once they’re there!

Examples

  1. Tiny pieces of plastic are entering the ocean from things like bottles and bags, which harm sea animals.
  2. Fish eat these tiny plastics, and then we eat the fish, so it ends up in our bodies too.
  3. Plastic breaks down into smaller bits over time, making pollution even harder to clean up.
