Why are Australian universities dropping in global rankings?

Australian universities are having a harder time winning big prizes in global lists because some things they used to do really well are now not as good as before.

Imagine you're playing a game where you get points for doing cool things like solving puzzles, making friends, and finishing tasks quickly. For a long time, Australian schools were getting lots of points, they were really good at these things. But now, some other schools around the world are working super hard and getting more points than them.

One reason is that more students are going to universities in other countries, like China or South Korea. It's like if your best friend moved away to join a new team, you might not be as strong in the game anymore.

Also, some Australian schools have been spending money on things like buildings and fancy equipment, but they're not always using that money wisely. It's like buying a big toy, but then forgetting to play with it.

So even though Australian universities are still really good, they’re just not as far ahead in the game as they used to be, and that’s why their scores are going down a little bit in the global rankings.
