Why Was the Ancient World So Much Darker Than Ours?

Imagine if you had to sleep when the sun went down. Long ago, that was exactly what people did! Houses were very dark because light was hard to make and keep going.

What They Used

Most families used wood fires in the middle of their homes. The smoke would fill up the room until it hurt your eyes, but at least you could see a little bit. Later, they started using oil lamps, which were like tiny pots with a string wick floating in olive oil. These gave a soft yellow glow.

Why It Was Dark

Light is actually tricky! Sunlight is free and super bright. But making light inside takes work. You have to collect the wood or press olives for oil. And if you forget to blow out the lamp, it goes out and you are left in the dark. So, rich people had lots of lamps, but poor people saved money by sleeping early.

Changing Habits

Because nights were so pitch black outside, people stayed close to home after dinner. They might not do much more than talk or mend nets. But inside, that warm lamp light made the house feel cozy. Over hundreds of years, we got better at making oil and candles, so we started staying up later to play, eat, and tell stories.
