The Buddha: Life and Legacy of Siddhartha Gautama

Siddhartha Gautama is the original name of the person we now call Buddha. He was a prince who gave up his soft, cushioned life to find out why people feel sad or worried.

Why He Left Home

Imagine you have a big, warm house with plenty of toys and snacks, but you notice your friends look tired or grumpy. Siddhartha wanted to find the "off switch" for sadness. He stepped outside his castle walls and saw old people, sick people, and a dead body. This was like seeing a cracked screen on a favorite tablet, it showed him that comfort doesn’t last forever.

The Big Discovery

He sat under a big tree for a long time, not moving, just watching his thoughts like clouds floating in the sky. He found that we feel pain because we cling too tightly to things, like grabbing a hot potato without gloves. Letting go brings calm. This calm is called Nirvana. It isn’t magic; it is like putting down a heavy backpack after a long hike. You breathe easier. He taught that happiness comes from inside, not from having the newest toy or the biggest pile of candy.

He didn’t want to be a king; he wanted to be a guide for others.
