Nicolas Copernicus was a smart man who changed how we see the sky and our place in it.
Imagine you're sitting on a merry-go-round at the park. When it spins, everything around you looks like it's moving, but maybe you are the one spinning instead! That’s what Nicolas thought about the stars and planets. He believed that the Earth was not the center of everything, but just one of many planets going around the Sun, like a big cosmic merry-go-round.
The Old Way vs. the New Idea
Before Nicolas, most people thought the Sun and all the stars went around the Earth, it felt like that because we see the sky moving above us every day. But Nicolas noticed some tricky patterns in how the planets moved. He did lots of careful calculations, like counting steps or measuring distances between things you can touch.
He proposed that everything, including our Earth, was spinning and going around the Sun, just like a planet in a big orbit. This idea helped scientists later understand the sky better and made room for new discoveries about space.
Examples
- He thought the Earth went around the sun like a spinning top.
