Metafictional elements are when a story talks about itself or other stories, like a book that knows it's being read.
Imagine you're reading a fairy tale, but suddenly the character looks up and says, “Hey, I'm in a book!” That’s metafiction, it's like the story is breaking the fourth wall to have a chat with you.
Like a Book Talking to You
Think of your favorite picture book. Now imagine that book starts talking about how it was written, or maybe even mentions the author by name. It might say something like, “I’m a dragon in this story, and I know I'm not real, but I still have a lot of fun!” That’s metafictional elements at work.
When Stories Meet Other Stories
Sometimes stories don’t just talk about themselves, they talk to other stories. Like when a character from one book visits another book's world. It’s like your toy dinosaur meeting your teddy bear in a new adventure, both are familiar, but now they’re together in a brand-new story!
