Who is Lack of Reciprocity?

Lack of Reciprocity is when you give something to someone else, but they do not give anything back in return.

Think about playing on a playground seesaw. When you push down hard to go up into the sky, you expect your friend to weigh enough or push down too so that you can come back down. That back and forth movement is reciprocity. It is a fair trade of effort. If you are heavy and your friend is light and just sits there while you do all the work, that is lack of reciprocity. You gave energy, but got nothing in return.

Everyday Examples

Imagine you share your favorite shiny red apple with your brother. He takes a big bite and smiles. That is good! But if he eats the whole thing without saying thanks or giving you his juice box, that is lack of reciprocity. He took from you without giving back. It feels unfair because the balance is broken.

Why It Matters

When there is no reciprocity, you might feel tired or annoyed. You start to wonder, "Why do I always have to give?" Over time, if people never give back, you stop sharing your toys or your snacks with them. Reciprocity keeps friendships happy because it feels like a fair game where everyone gets a turn. It is simply the rule of fair exchange that we all understand naturally when we play together.
