Who is Cai Lun?

Cai Lun was a person who figured out how to make paper in a really smart way.

Imagine you're playing with clay at the park. You squish it into shapes, and when it dries, it becomes hard. Now think about that, but instead of clay, Cai Lun used things like trees, rags, and even old fishing nets. He mixed them all together, made a kind of pulp, and then pressed it flat to make sheets. These were the very first paper we know of!

Before Cai Lun’s invention, people used things like parchment or bamboo slips to write on, which was heavy and not so easy to carry around. With paper, writing became much simpler. It's kind of like how using a soft notebook is easier than trying to write on a rough stone!

Cai Lun’s method made paper cheaper and more common, and soon people all over the world started using it too. Today, we still use paper every day, for drawing, writing letters, even wrapping presents. So next time you grab a piece of paper, remember: you're using a clever idea from a long time ago!
