Writing is like giving your ideas a voice so they can be heard far away and long after you're gone.
Imagine you have a really cool idea, maybe you want to tell your friend about it, but they’re not around. What do you do? You could draw a picture or leave a note. That’s the beginning of writing!
Long ago, people used symbols, like pictures that stood for words or sounds. This was called writing, and it helped them remember things, tell stories, and even keep track of money.
The First Writers
The first known writers were in a place called Sumer, which is now part of Iraq. They lived around 3000 years before you were born! These people used small clay shapes, like tiny bricks, and pressed them with sticks to make marks on wet clay. This was called cuneiform, and it looked like little wedges.
It’s like when you press your finger into play-doh, the mark you leave behind is a symbol of what you felt or thought at that moment. These early writers did something similar, but instead of play-doh, they used clay, and instead of your finger, they used sticks. And just like that, writing was born!
