What Is Surface Area?

Now imagine you have two sponges. One is soft and squishy, and the other is hard and compact. If you press water into them, the soft one will hold more water because it has more porosity, that means it has lots of tiny spaces inside where water can go.
Live rock with a lot of surface area and porosity is like a sponge full of little rooms, each room can be home to a tiny sea creature. So, when you're picking live rock for your aquarium, the one that looks most like a crumpled-up sponge is probably the best choice!
