Where Do Fingerprints Come From?

Fingerprints are special patterns on our fingers that help us touch and grab things.

When you’re born, your skin is like a soft cookie dough, still squishy and not fully cooked. As it grows harder over time, little bumps and lines push up through the skin, making the unique patterns we call fingerprints. These bumps are called ridges, and the spaces between them are called valleys.

Every person has a different set of ridges and valleys because each person’s skin grows in its own special way. It's like how your shoes might look slightly different from your brother’s, even if you both wear the same kind of shoe!

These patterns stay with us our whole life, just like a special code that only belongs to you. That’s why police can use them to find out who touched something, they're like a personal signature on your finger!
