What popular medieval animal is rare in England today?

The beaver was once a common friend in medieval England, but today it’s quite rare there.

Imagine you’re playing in a muddy puddle, and you see a big, busy builder with sharp teeth and a flat tail. That’s a beaver! They love to build dams in rivers, which creates ponds, kind of like building a wall with sticks and mud to make a new lake. In medieval times, there were lots of these builders all over England.

But now, if you go to England, it's like looking for a hidden treasure, the beavers are very few and far between. They’re more common in places like Scotland or Canada, where they still have plenty of rivers to build their homes.

People used to hunt beavers for their fur, which was really soft and shiny, like wearing a blanket made from clouds. That’s why there were fewer beavers over time, it's like if you kept taking away all the builders in your puddle game!

So even though they’re rare now, the beaver is still a special animal that once helped shape England’s rivers and lakes.
