What Makes Your Hair Curl?

Your hair curls because of how your hair shafts are shaped and what they're made of.

Imagine each strand of your hair is like a tiny straw, some straws are perfectly straight, but others are a little bent or twisted. When you look in the mirror, those bent straws make your hair look curly!

Now think about when you brush your hair with a comb. If your hair is straight, it’s easy to smooth out. But if your hair shafts are already a bit wavy or twisted, they want to go back to their natural shape, just like how a spring wants to bounce back after being squished.

Some people have curly hair because of something called keratin, which is like the building block of your hair. It’s kind of like the special glue that makes your hair strong and gives it its shape. If more keratin is on one side of the hair shaft, it can make that strand curl instead of stay straight.

So, whether you have curly or straight hair, it all comes down to how those tiny hair shafts are shaped and what they’re made of, just like how different straws can look and act in different ways!
