What Makes a ‘Sushi’ Roll Feel Fresh?

A sushi roll feels fresh when it’s made with ingredients that are just right and not too old.

Imagine you're eating a sandwich, if the bread is soft and warm, and the cheese is gooey and tasty, it makes your mouth happy. That's kind of like what happens with a sushi roll. The rice inside needs to be cooked just enough, not too hard, not too runny. If the rice is too wet, it can make the whole roll feel soggy, like when you drop your sandwich in a puddle.

Also, the fish, like tuna or salmon, should be cold and shiny, like how your ice cream feels on a hot day. If the fish is warm or mushy, it doesn’t taste as good, just like how melted ice cream isn’t as fun to eat.

Sometimes, they add wasabi (a green spicy paste) inside the roll, and it makes your nose tingle, kind of like when you laugh really hard and your nose feels funny. But if the wasabi is old, it doesn’t tingle as much, so the whole roll isn't as exciting.

When everything is just right, that’s when the sushi roll feels fresh, like a little burst of happiness in your mouth!
