What Makes a Shadow Have Shape?

Shadows get their shape from the light around them. Imagine you're holding up a toy dinosaur in front of a lamp, the shadow looks like a dinosaur because the light is hiding parts of it. If the light comes from one side, the shadow stretches out on the other side. It's like the light is drawing a picture of what it can't see.
