What Makes a Painting ‘Realistic’ or ‘Abstract’?

A painting is realistic if it looks just like something you see every day, or abstract if it feels more like a dream or a mood.

Imagine you're looking at a picture of an apple, if it has crinkle lines on the skin and a shadow under it, that’s realistic, like seeing the actual apple in your lunchbox. But if the painting just has big red shapes and blue squiggles, without any clear lines or edges, that's abstract, kind of like how you might draw an apple when you're sleepy and not paying attention.

Realistic paintings try to look exactly like things in real life. Think about a photo, that’s realistic too! The painter uses colors and shapes that match what you see with your eyes, so it feels familiar.

Abstract paintings don’t try to copy the world exactly. They’re more about showing how something feels or how the artist is thinking at the moment. It's like drawing with your eyes closed, you might make big blobs of color that remind you of a cat, but no one can tell what it really is.

Sometimes, the same painter can do both kinds, just like how you can draw a perfect square and then doodle silly shapes all over it!
