What Makes a ‘Laser’ Different from a ‘Flashlight’?

A laser is like a super-focused flashlight that sends out light all in one direction, while a regular flashlight spreads its light out everywhere.

Imagine you have a flashlight and you shine it on the wall, the light makes a big round shape. Now picture a laser, like the one in a toy pointer. When you turn it on, it shoots a tiny, straight line of light across the room. That’s because the laser keeps all its light together, while the flashlight lets the light spread out.

A flashlight uses a bulb and a reflector to make light, but that light goes in many directions, like when you draw with crayons and color all over the paper. A laser, on the other hand, uses special materials inside it to make the light go straight, like when you line up your toys in a row and they all face the same way.
