What led the colonists to Declare Independence- the Declaration & Its Meaning?

The American colonists decided to say "We are on our own!" because they were tired of being treated unfairly by their faraway rulers.

Imagine you're playing with your friends in the backyard, and someone from the next neighborhood comes over and says, "You have to share all your toys, and I get to decide what happens every day." That would feel unfair, right? Well, that's kind of how the American colonists felt toward King George III and his group of rulers in England.

Why They Got Tired

The colonists had to pay extra taxes for things like tea and paper, even though they didn't get to vote on those rules. It was like being told you have to give up your favorite candy every week, but you don’t get a say in what happens next.

They also wanted more freedom to make their own choices, just like how you might want to decide what game to play instead of letting someone else choose for you all the time.

The Declaration

So they wrote down all their reasons and said, "We are no longer going to follow those rules!" That big paper is called the Declaration of Independence, and it was like a letter saying, "We're starting our own club now, we’re not playing by your rules anymore!"

That's how the United States began! 🎉
