What is Yugoslavia?

Yugoslavia was a big country made up of many smaller countries living together like friends in one house.

Yugoslavia means "land of the south Slavs." It was like a neighborhood where different families lived together, some were from Serbia, others from Croatia, Bosnia, Slovenia, and more. They all shared the same roof, the country, but had their own rooms, their own cultures and languages.

Imagine going to school with many friends who all have different hobbies. Some like drawing, others like sports, and some like music. Even though you all go to the same school, you each have your own favorite things. Yugoslavia was like that school, one big country where many smaller groups lived together.

Sometimes, they got along well and played games together. But sometimes, they had disagreements and wanted to move out into their own houses, which is what happened when Yugoslavia split into several countries in the 1990s.

Now those friends live in their own homes, but they still remember how it was when they all lived together.
