Windmills: From Grain Mills to Green Energy

A windmill is a special machine that uses moving air to help people.

Think about how you run with your arms out to feel the air push against you. The wind does the same thing to big, flat blades on the windmill. When the wind blows, it pushes those blades, and they start to spin around in a circle.

This spinning motion is very useful. For hundreds of years, people built windmills to do hard jobs without using muscle power. Imagine having to push a heavy wheel to grind wheat into flour. A windmill does that work for you. It turns the wind into power.

Old windmills were mostly used to crush grains into flour or pump water from deep underground wells. The spinning shaft connects to gears inside. Those gears turn a heavy stone, which smashes the wheat. It is like a giant, wind-powered blender!

Today, we also see wind turbines. They look like windmills but are designed to make electricity. The spinning blades turn a generator, which creates the power that lights up your house. So, the windmill takes something you cannot hold, the wind, and turns it into something you can use, like food or light. It is a clever way to borrow energy from nature.

Just like you use your hands to catch a ball, the windmill uses its big blades to catch the wind!
