What is Volatility index (VIX)?

The VIX is like a weather forecast for the stock market, it tells us how scary or calm people think things will be in the near future.

Imagine you're playing a game where you guess what your friend's mood will be tomorrow. If they’ve been happy lately, you might say “they’ll probably be happy again.” But if they've been grumpy and stormy all week, you might say, “I bet they’re going to be really grumpy tomorrow.”

The VIX works like that game, but for the whole stock market. When people think the market is going to go up or down a lot, the VIX gets higher. When things seem calm and steady, it goes lower.

How the VIX Helps People

Think of the VIX as a special kind of thermometer for investors, not for body temperature, but for how nervous or excited people are about money. If the VIX is high, it means people expect big changes soon, like a storm in the sky. If it's low, they're probably expecting sunny days ahead.

Investors use this “weather forecast” to decide when to buy or sell stocks, just like you might bring an umbrella if you think it’s going to rain! The VIX is like a weather forecast for the stock market, it tells us how scary or calm people think things will be in the near future.

  2. Imagine a playground swing, the higher it goes, the more energy it takes. The VIX shows how wild the swings are in the stock market.
  3. If a group of friends are all nervous about a test, their anxiety levels go up. Similarly, when investors are scared, the VIX rises.
