What Does It Mean to Vaporize?

Vaporizing is when a liquid turns into an invisible gas that floats away into the air.

Think about a pot of water on the stove. At first, it is still and cool. Then, you add heat. The water gets hot, starts to bubble, and then... poof! It becomes steam. You cannot see steam easily, but you can feel it if you put your hand above the pot. The water did not disappear; it just changed its shape to become a gas.

How It Happens

Everything around us is made of tiny bits called molecules. In a liquid, these bits are close together, like kids holding hands in a circle. When you add heat, the bits start dancing faster and faster. Eventually, they move so quickly that they break their hand-holds and fly apart.

  • Gas: Molecules are far apart and move very fast.
