What is underground?

Underground is like having a secret room below your house that you can only reach by going down stairs.

Imagine you have a toy box in your bedroom. Now, picture another toy box right under your floor, you can’t see it from above, but if you go down some steps or dig through the floor, you find it. That’s underground, a place below the ground where things live or are hidden.

Like a Hidden Playground

Think of the earth as a big cake. When you eat a slice, you’re eating from the top. But if you dig into the cake, you can find layers that are hidden inside. Underground is like digging into that cake, it’s all the parts of the earth below our feet.

Things Live Down There

Some animals, like moles and rabbits, live underground. They have special ways to move through dirt and rocks, just like how you might crawl under a table or slide under your bed. Sometimes people build houses underground too, they’re called basements, and you can go down stairs to visit them, just like visiting a friend's house in the neighborhood.

So next time you dig in the sandbox or go down the stairs to the basement, remember, you're exploring the underground!
