What is tribology?

Tribology is the study of how things move and what happens when they rub together.

Imagine you're sliding your toy car across the floor. If the floor is smooth, the car zooms along easily, but if it's rough, like a carpet, the car slows down or gets stuck. That’s tribology in action!

What Tribology Looks At

Tribology looks at friction, which is the force that makes things slow down when they rub together. It also studies wear, which is how surfaces get damaged over time from rubbing, like your shoes getting scuffed after a long walk.

Why It Matters

Think about your bike. If you don’t oil the chain, it gets harder to pedal because of friction. Oil helps reduce that friction, making biking easier, just like how a smooth floor makes your toy car go faster!

Tribology is everywhere, from your joints (which are like moving parts in your body) to the engines in cars and even your pencil when you write on paper. It’s all about helping things move smoothly and last longer!
