What is transmutation?

Transmutation is when one kind of atom changes into another kind of atom, like turning lead into gold, but without magic.

Imagine you have a box full of blue marbles, and suddenly they become red marbles. That’s what happens inside some special materials or during certain reactions. The marbles are like atoms, and changing their color is like changing their type.

How it works

Think of atoms as tiny buildings made up of different parts: the nucleus (like the foundation) and electrons (like the people moving around). If you change what’s inside the nucleus, maybe by adding or removing a part called a proton, the atom becomes a new kind of atom. That's transmutation!

Sometimes, this happens naturally in things like rocks deep underground, or it can be made to happen with special tools in labs.

A real-life example

In some old coins, scientists found that lead had slowly changed into gold over many years, just like how a blue marble could turn red after being in the right place for long enough. It’s like a slow, quiet transformation happening all around us!
