There are 538 electors in total who help choose the president, like a big group of friends picking their favorite classmate to be leader.
Imagine you and your classmates each get to pick one person from another class to be the best student in school. If every class has a few students helping decide, then all those helpers together are like a big team, that’s what the electors are like!
How They Count
Each state gets some electors based on how many people live there. It's like having more votes if your group is bigger. Some states have more electors than others.
When people vote in an election, they’re not just voting for a candidate, they're helping choose who will be part of that big team of 538 electors. After everyone votes, each state’s electors meet up and pick the person who got the most votes in their area.
In the end, whoever gets more than half of those 538 friends, that is, 270 or more, becomes president!
