A tort is like when someone bumps into you on the playground and makes you fall, they did something wrong, and now they need to fix it.
Imagine you're playing with your favorite toy car, zooming around the neighborhood. Suddenly, another kid crashes into you, and your car flies off a cliff (or just falls over). That’s a tort, it's when someone does something that hurts or bothers another person, and they have to make things right.
What Makes It a Tort?
A tort is not like a game with rules, it's more like when you break the unspoken rule of being kind. If someone hits you with their toy truck, or takes your snack without asking, that’s a tort, too.
Sometimes, the person who did the tort has to say sorry, give back what was taken, or even share some snacks, just like in real life when you bump into someone and then offer them a cookie to make it better.
Examples
- A person slips on a wet floor in a store and falls, causing injury, this is an example of tort law.
- If someone hits your car while driving recklessly, you can claim compensation through tort law.
- Your neighbor’s dog bites you, and you sue them for damages, that's also a tort case.
