The third law says that whenever something pushes or pulls on another thing, the other thing pushes or pulls back just as hard.
Imagine you're playing with your friend in a swimming pool. When you push your friend, they go one way, but you also get pushed the other way! It's like when you jump off a diving board: you push down on the board, and the board pushes up on you, that’s why you go flying into the water!
Like a Bouncy Ball
Think about a bouncy ball. When it hits the ground, it pushes down on the floor. The floor doesn’t just sit there, it pushes back up on the ball! That's why the ball bounces: every push gets a matching push in return.
Push-Pull Partners
You can think of action and reaction like best friends who always do things together. If one pushes, the other pulls, they’re always equal and opposite, just like you and your friend in the pool!
Examples
- A person pushing a shopping cart forward also gets pushed backward slightly.
- A rocket moves upward because it expels gas downward.
