What is thermoregulation?

Thermoregulation is how your body keeps you at just the right temperature, whether it's cold outside or hot inside.

Imagine your body is like a cozy blanket that can change its thickness. When it’s chilly, your body works to warm up, like when you snuggle under a thick blanket on a cold night. You might shiver, which is like tiny shakes that help make you feel warmer. Your blood also goes closer to the surface of your skin, helping you stay warm.

When it’s hot, your body tries to cool down, just like when you take off your jacket and sweat on a sunny day. You might feel your skin get all prickly as tiny holes open up (called pores), letting out sweat that cools you down as it evaporates.

How It Works Inside

Your body has special sensors, kind of like little thermometers, that check the temperature around you and inside you. If they notice a change, they send messages to your brain, which then tells your body what to do, like turning up the heat or opening the windows.

It’s like having a smart thermostat for your whole body!
