The universe is made of stuff, just like your toy box is full of different kinds of toys.
Imagine you have a giant bag of building blocks, some are tiny and bumpy, others are smooth and big. That’s kind of what the universe looks like when we look at it closely. The main types of stuff in the universe are called matter and energy.
What is matter?
Matter is anything you can touch. Your toy blocks are made of matter. So are your toys, your bed, even the air you breathe. Scientists think that most of the matter in the universe is something we can’t see, it’s like invisible building blocks hiding inside everything else.
What is energy?
Energy is like the power that makes things happen. When you push a toy car, you give it energy to move. The sun gives off energy, which helps plants grow and keeps us warm. Even though we can’t see energy, it’s everywhere, in light, in heat, and even in your body when you run around.
So the universe is like a huge, invisible toy box full of matter and energy, just waiting for us to explore!
Examples
- If you could see all the stuff in space, most of it would be invisible and unknown.
- Like how a building is made from bricks, the universe is built from tiny particles.
