What Is the Tragedy of the Commons?

Imagine you and your friends find a giant chocolate fountain. Everyone can dip their spoons. If everyone takes just a little, the chocolate lasts for everyone. But if everyone grabs as much as they can, the fountain runs dry quickly. This is the Tragedy of the Commons. It happens when people use a shared resource too much because no single person owns it.

When a resource is shared, each person thinks, "If I don't take more, someone else will." So everyone takes more than they need. The result? The resource disappears.

To fix this, we need rules. We can limit who takes, when they take, or how much they take. Without rules, the common good gets ruined.
