What is The speed of light?

The speed of light is how fast light moves through space, just like how fast you run or how fast a car goes.

Imagine you're playing catch with your best friend in the park. You throw a ball, and it takes a little time to reach them. Now imagine instead of a ball, you're throwing a super-fast flash of light, like from a flashlight. That flash zips through space really quickly, so fast that if you were throwing it to someone on the other side of the planet, they'd get it almost instantly!

How fast is "super-fast"?

Light moves at about 670 million miles per hour! That's like going around the Earth more than 10 times in just one second. If you had a car that could go as fast as light, you’d be able to travel from New York to Los Angeles in less than a blink of an eye.

Even though it’s super-fast, light can still take time to reach us, like when we look at the sun, we’re actually seeing it as it was about 8 minutes ago. That's because light has to travel all that way through space before it reaches our eyes! The speed of light is how fast light moves through space, just like how fast you run or how fast a car goes.
