What is the ocean breathing in and out?

The ocean is breathing in and breathing out, just like you do when you take deep breaths.

Imagine the ocean as a giant fish that takes big swallows of air, but instead of air, it's swallowing something else. When the ocean inhales, it takes in water from the sky, which is called rain. This happens when clouds get heavy and drop their water on the sea.

When the ocean exhales, it pushes some of its water back up to the sky, this becomes clouds again, and sometimes even rain once more.

Like a Water Roller Coaster

Think of the ocean as a roller coaster. When the waves go up high, that’s like the ocean inhaling, it's taking in more water from the sky. When the waves go down low, that’s like the ocean exhaling, sending some of its water back to the sky.

So every time you see rain or clouds, you're watching the ocean do its big breaths, just like you do when you’re playing and laughing!
