What is the new Europa Clipper mission looking for?

The Europa Clipper mission is going to explore a moon called Europa and look for signs that there might be life under its icy surface.

Imagine you have a chocolate bar covered in ice cream. You can’t see the chocolate, but you think it’s there because you know what happens when you melt the ice cream. That's kind of like what scientists think is happening on Europa, they believe there's an ocean underneath all that ice, and maybe even life hiding in that ocean.

What They're Looking For

The Europa Clipper will take pictures and do experiments to check if this ocean exists. It’ll look for things like water plumes, which are like geysers that shoot water from the ocean up through the ice.

It also wants to see how much the surface is changing, kind of like watching a snowman melt in the sun. If the ice moves around or cracks open, it might show scientists where they can look for signs of life or even take samples.

The mission is like a detective, it's going to gather clues so we can figure out if Europa is hiding something amazing under its icy shell!
