The Space Vacuum Cleaner
Imagine the sun is a giant, glowing campfire. It doesn’t just give off light and heat; it also blows out tiny bits of itself, called solar wind. The Genesis spacecraft acted like a super-powered vacuum cleaner floating in space. Instead of sucking up dirt from your bedroom floor, it opened special containers to catch these microscopic sun particles.
Why was this important? Scientists wanted to know exactly what the sun, and by extension, our whole solar system, is made of. The Bumpy Landing
The mission had a rocky ending. When the capsule returned to Earth, it was supposed to float down gently using a parachute, like a leaf drifting on a breeze. But the parachute got tangled, and the capsule hit the desert ground with a big thud.
Even though the container cracked open, scientists were still able to rescue many of the precious samples.
