What Is The Look And Say Sequence?

The Look and Say Sequence is like a fun game where you describe what you see, over and over again.

Imagine you have a number, like 1. That’s your starting point. Now, look at it closely: there's one 1. So you say “one 1”, which becomes 11.

Next time, you look at 11: there are two 1s, so you say “two 1s”, that turns into 21.

Then you look at 21: there's one 2 and one 1, so you say “one 2, one 1”, which becomes 1211.

Keep going: 1211 has one 1, one 2, and two 1s, so it turns into 111221.

It's like describing what you see in a drawing, but with numbers! Each time, you're taking the last number and saying how many of each digit there are. It’s not magic, it’s just counting and talking about what you see, step by step.

How It Grows

Every new number is made from describing the one before it, like a story that keeps getting longer and more interesting. You don’t need special powers, just good eyes and a little imagination!
