What is the Commonwealth? - BBC What's New?

The Commonwealth is like a big group of friends who help each other out and have fun together.

Imagine you're playing a game with your best friends from school, some are in your class, others live across the street or even in another country. You all agree on some simple rules so everyone can enjoy the game fairly. That's kind of like what the Commonwealth is, it’s a group of countries that work together and help each other out.

Like a Club for Countries

The Commonwealth started many years ago, when a king from a faraway place had many different countries under his rule. Now, those countries are all grown-up and have their own leaders, but they still meet up regularly to talk about things like education, health, and making sure everyone can live well.

Some of the countries in the Commonwealth are really close, like Canada and Australia, while others are just friends who say “hello” once in a while. Still, they all share something special: they help each other when needed, just like good friends do.
