What is sympathetic?

Sympathetic means being able to feel what someone else is feeling, like you're sharing their emotions.

Imagine you have a best friend who just dropped their ice cream on the ground. You see them look sad, and suddenly, you feel a little sad too. That’s sympathy in action, it's like your heart says, “Ouch, that hurts!”

How It Works

Think of sympathy as a special kind of empathy, like when you're wearing a pair of soft socks. When your friend is happy, it feels like you’re both wearing warm socks on a chilly day. When they’re sad, it's like the socks got wet and muddy.

Sometimes, being sympathetic means doing something kind, like offering them a new ice cream cone. Other times, it’s just feeling their joy or sadness from afar, like when you see your friend laugh and you can’t help but smile too.

It doesn’t take magic, just a little understanding and a heart that listens.
