What is sunset?

A sunset is when the sky changes colors because the sun moves behind the horizon.

Imagine you're playing with a ball in your backyard. When you roll it toward you, it's easy to see. But when you roll it far away and it goes out of sight, it’s like the sun doing the same thing at the end of the day, it rolls behind the horizon, which is like the edge of the world as you see it.

Why the sky changes color

When the sun is high in the sky, it looks white or yellow. But when it goes lower, near the horizon, the light has to travel through more of the Earth's air. This makes the sky look red, orange, or pink, like when you shine a flashlight through a glass of water and see colors on the other side.

What happens after sunset

Once the sun is completely behind the horizon, it gets darker little by little, and that’s called night. But don’t worry, the sun will come back tomorrow, just like your ball comes rolling back to you when you play again!
